Think buying a home is beyond you? Think again!

15th July 2008

Open day to find out about affordable homes in Knowle and Bishopsworth

Redland Housing Association has 41 homes available in south Bristol on a part-buy, part-rent basis with New Build HomeBuy. And the message is that first-time buyers shouldn’t be put off by the ‘credit crunch’.

A special open day at one of the developments aims to show visitors how they can still purchase a home affordably. The event at Henry House, Queens Road, Bishopsworth is on Saturday 19th July from 10am to 3pm.

To help buyers even further, anyone who reserves a property at Henry House on the day will receive free carpets.

New Build HomeBuy is a government-backed scheme that lets you move in to a new home on a part-buy, part-rent basis. It’s simple – you buy a percentage of your home (often 50%) and pay a subsidised rent on the rest. As your circumstances change, you can buy further shares until you own your whole home.

At Henry House, there are 12 two-bedroom flats available. These properties are located on Queens Road in Bishopsworth, close to shops and facilities including a junior school, supermarket and pharmacy. It is near the A4 and A38 and a mile from Bedminster railway station.

There are also 29 homes at Brunel Heights, off Connaught Road in Knowle. They are spacious and built to a high standard, with some enjoying excellent views over Bristol. There is a mix of two-bedroom flats and houses, plus three-bedroom houses, including a town house design laid out over three floors.

Priority will be given to applicants with a local connection to Bristol and who are registered with the HomeBuy agent New Futures and with Bristol City Council on their housing waiting list. Until the end of July, anyone registering with New Futures will receive a free memory stick.

Prices and monthly repayments are as follows:

  • Two-bedroom flats at Henry House starting at £68,750 for a 50% share, plus rent of £128.91 pcm.

At Brunel Heights:

  • Two-bed flats starting at £57,500 for a 50% share, plus rent of £71.88 pcm.
  • Two-bed houses starting at £68,000 for a 50% share, plus rent of £155.83 pcm.
  • Three-bed houses starting at £76,500 for a 50% share, plus rent of £175.31 pcm.

The homes will be managed by Redland Housing Association, a member of Somer Housing Group, which is developing them. Funding for the scheme was made possible by another Group member, Somer Community Housing Trust, which will retain ownership of the properties.

Louise Swain, Managing Director of Redland Housing Association, said:

‘This is a difficult time for many buyers as the “credit crunch” takes effect. We are pleased to be able to offer people in Bristol the chance to own a more affordable home, who might otherwise be forced out of the area by high house prices that remain out of reach for many. Come along to our open day and find out more about New Build HomeBuy and how it can help you or your family get a foot on the property ladder.’
