Second phase brings more, affordable homes to Chancellor’s Park, Long Ashton

16th February 2009

A development in Long Ashton has been successful in providing more affordable homes for the village.

The second phase of building work at Chancellor’s Park – the site of a former cider and apple research station – has included six homes to let at affordable rents and two for New Build HomeBuy (part-buy, part-rent).

North Somerset Council’s Chairman, Councillor David Shopland, officially opened the first phase in 2007 and these latest completions bring the total numbers to 14 rented homes and 15 sold through the New Build HomeBuy scheme. All of these homes are managed by Redland Housing Association.

New Build HomeBuy is a government scheme, which allows buyers to purchase a proportion of the property, often fifty per cent, and rent the rest from the housing association. As their circumstances change, buyers can purchase more of their home until it is theirs outright.

The homes to rent are available to people who have been identified as being in housing need and are registered with North Somerset Council on their housing waiting list.

The site has a long history – for a century the research station was at the forefront of agricultural research and developed many of the techniques that are used in today’s cider making, as well as creating the children’s blackcurrant drink Ribena.

Louise Swain, Managing Director of Redland Housing Association, said:

‘We are pleased to be able to deliver affordable housing options for people from North Somerset who want to stay in the area. The development has been completed to a very high standard and has been well received by the residents. All of the properties are now occupied and we wish the residents a happy future in their new homes.’

Chancellor’s Park has been developed by Taylor Wimpey and consists of 96 homes in total.

Meanwhile, an innovative, new Rent to Buy scheme is the latest way to get on the housing ladder at a number of locations in Bristol. For people who can't afford a mortgage, can't get a mortgage or have simply been put off purchasing in the current economic climate, this ‘try before you buy’ scheme gives the best of both worlds. You can rent a home at a substantial discount (the rent is calculated at 80% of the local market rent) and at a later date you will be given the first chance to buy the property through New Build HomeBuy.
