Event celebrates new, affordable rented homes in the heart of
Trowbridge
25th April 2008
Seventeen new homes built by Somer Community
Housing Trust are now providing affordable rented accommodation in
the centre of Trowbridge. A celebration of the completion of the
scheme at Park Road was held on Thursday, 24th April.
Councillor Michael Mounde and John Bader, the Trust’s Chair,
toured the new homes, together with residents, representatives from
West Wiltshire District Council and other guests involved in the
development.
The building, an old Victorian mill, which later housed storage
and machine rooms for Colborne Trophies (which is still based in
the building), has been refurbished to provide 11 one-bedroom and 6
two-bedroom flats. The development cost around £1.3 million to
build, with £935,000 grant funding from the Housing
Corporation.
These homes will be let at affordable rents to people who have
been identified as being in housing need via the Homes 4 West
Wiltshire service provided by West Wiltshire District Council.
John Bader, Chair of the Trust, said:
‘We are pleased to be able to provide homes
right in the heart of the town. The government has set developing
”brownfield” sites like this as a high priority in tackling the
housing crisis. As a housing association, we want to create
successful neighbourhoods where people really want to live. This
has proved a great opportunity to contribute to help support the
local community.’
Councillor Michael Mounde, Cabinet member and economy portfolio
holder at West Wiltshire District Council, said:
‘These 17 marvellous new Somer Community
Housing Trust homes are yet another stepping stone towards
transforming Trowbridge into a county town that everyone wants to
be really proud of. Together with the new, big developments about
to happen just the other side of the park, this brings to the very
centre of the town a new life and vibrancy. Our very best wishes to
those who will be living in them over the coming years.’
