Event celebrates completion of award winning project at
Writhlington
A big celebration event to mark the completion of
the award-winning Writhlington Plantation project was held on
Tuesday, 29th April.
Highlights of the event included children from St Mary’s School
in Writhlington singing a song, the unveiling of new information
boards, a local storyteller and an entertainer. A ribbon was cut at
the now iconic Plantation archway to officially open the
rejuvenated woodland area and guests enjoyed a special cake, baked
for the occasion.
The Plantation project is an exciting example of real
partnership in action. A wide range of young people, older
residents and local organisations have worked with the Trust to
successfully transform a neglected woodland into a safe and natural
space in which community members can meet, learn and play.
The project has proved so successful that it was recognised with
an award from the Tenant Participation Advisory Service in the
‘Green Project / Initiative in the Community’ category of the South
West ‘Connecting People’ awards.
The emphasis has been on protecting wildlife and the project has
included works to keep the trees healthy, new footpaths,
woodcarvings, seating, bat and bird boxes, creating natural
habitats, a wooden throne and stage, and a cycle trail.
Managing Director Angela Gascoigne said:
‘For many years this small woodland has
suffered from fly-tipping, dog mess and litter. Somer Community
Housing Trust has worked very closely with a wide range of groups
and individuals to turn this situation around. A huge amount has
been achieved and the woodland is now an exciting space for all to
enjoy.’
The list of partners involved in the project includes Community
Play Rangers, Norton Radstock College, St Mary's Primary School,
the Trust’s Sustainability Forum and Cam Valley Wildlife.
