Sustainable Community Strategy 2009-2026
The council’s new Sustainable Community Strategy
sets out a vision for a sustainable Bath & North East
Somerset.
The strategy was developed by the Bath & North East Somerset
Local Strategic Partnership, of which Somer Community Housing Trust
is a member.
The strategy will help provide the vision of how the area will
be a distinctive place, with vibrant sustainable communities where
everyone fulfils their potential. The strategy sets out the
challenges we face but also how we will tackle them. These
challenges are called ‘drivers for change’. They are:
- Climate change – changing weather, rising energy costs and the
need to lead a lower-carbon lifestyle.
- Demographic change – the local population is increasing and
there will be more elderly members of our communities.
- Growth – housing and employment needs are likely to increase
and growth will be required. This growth must be sustainable with
the necessary infrastructure in place.
- Inequalities – there are notable life expectancy gaps in the
area that need to be addressed.
- Locality – there need to be local services everyone can access,
plus more local food and sustainable, local energy production.
- Economy – the economic downturn means there are pressures on
how we provide services. We will be reviewing how we provide
services and looking at ways of working more closely with other
areas and agencies.
