Environmental Action Days
The main aim of EAD is simple: to improve the
environment and conditions in an area in order that the residents
have an improved quality of life.
We have taken part in Environmental Action Days, which operate
on a six-weekly cycle. These are multi-agency, high visibility
operations in a specific area. This is a procedure that brings
together representatives of various agencies to work together in
teams.
They walk through a residential area in a highly-visible fashion
and identify and tackle problems as they encounter them. The teams
consist of a representative from each agency who addresses the
issues specific to their agency and attempts to solve the problem
or initiate action that will lead to a resolution of the issue as
soon as possible.
Examples of this are:
- Rubbish removed from streets.
- Untaxed, dangerous and abandoned vehicles removed.
- Graffiti cleaned off.
- Fire safety information given to residents and smoke alarms
fitted if needed.
- Truancy patrol.
A comparison can be made with 'clean-up' campaigns that many
authorities and other organisations arrange at present, but with
the important addition of dealing with issues from an enforcement
angle. This ensures that individuals or organisations that are
responsible for actions that have a negative impact on communities
are both identified and dealt with to ensure the activity is
stopped.
