Somer runs the highest ICT Help Desk in Britain for
charity
16th October 2008
Members of Somer Housing Group’s ICT Team trekked
up Snowdon on Friday, 3rd October to operate the highest ICT Help
Desk in Britain. Their efforts have already raised £1,245 (before
adding Gift Aid) for the Samaritans.
At 1,085m (3,560 feet), Snowdon is the highest mountain in
England and Wales. The team braved hail and high winds to make it
to the top, where they took calls from Somer staff.

The ‘Snowdon Six’ were: Gareth Barker, John Barnes, Alistair
Batchelor, Richard Green, Jason Nash and Joe Sutton. Their
expedition started at 5.30am, driving from Somerset to North Wales,
where they established a base camp at the foot of Snowdon, before
striking for the summit.
Visitors to Snowdon are usually able to take advantage of the
mountain train, which runs to a café at the top. However, the
service is not running while the café is being refurbished, so the
team couldn’t be tempted away from completing their mission
entirely on foot!
Richard Green, ICT Manager, said:
‘It was cold and hard going at times, but the
team rose to the challenge really well. We took calls on the way up
and down, and even at the top of Snowdon we were able to use a
laptop and mobile phone connection to provide the service.
‘We’ve been really pleased with the response
from staff and delighted to have raised such a large sum.’
